MIlk Gallery Presents: The Rickford Institute's All-Star Classic

December 15, 2011 / Kalvin Lazarte

Milk Gallery & TheGoodLife! celebrate street-photographer Ricky Powell, informally known as “the fourth Beastie Boy”, with an exhibition displaying classic works by the 80’s street photographer, as well as photography by selected artists part of Powell’s talent group, The Rickford Institute.

Ricky’s documentation of the subcultures of New York City in the 80’s is unmatched by anyone. It would be a true anomaly to find a young documentary photographer roaming the streets of New York that hasn’t been influenced by Ricky’s work. From Hip-Hop culture to drug culture; from Celebrities to skateboarders, Ricky’s photography seems to have taken him through every hole in the wall and hotel lobby in New York.

The Rickford Institute, created by Ricky Powell stays true to his genre and by the curation of the All-Star Classic, Powell ensures the legacy of documenting the street stays relevant. On display in the Milk Gallery, there will be iconic images by legends such as Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper, Charlie Ahearn, Henry Chalfant, Joe Conzo, Janette Beckman, as well as amazing work by up and comers such as Craig Wetherby, Angela Boatwright, Aviva Klein, 13th Witness, and Mel D. Cole and more.

Milk Gallery will open it’s doors to the public on Sunday, December 18th for the exhibition that will last through Thursday, December 22nd.
