Winners of the MADE For Peroni Young Designer Award, Ava Hama and Nolan Bellavance showed their inaugural collection at Milk Studios last night. The award, which was open exclusively to select Parsons SoF graduates and alumni, meant $25,000 in funding, as well as production support and personal mentoring from London-based designer Antonio Beradi in the lead up to the presentation - and the result was a strong, if somewhat disparate, vision of downtown cool.
A black, drawstring waisted lambskin dress was one obvious and easy triumph, as was a beautifully cut, white speckled wool top and pant combo. A Raccoon and cashmere coat, worn with a red organza blouse and longer length, white silk-cotton A-line skirt, was just the right side of thrift-store chic, while a structural, red silk organza dress belied Beradi’s sensual influence. One other stand-out piece was the black silk faille parker with black and white striped fox fur detail; the kind of garment that just screams “look-at-me” - but in all the very best ways.
