Art Basel

A Short History of the GIF

December 4, 2012 / Kalvin Lazarte

Tomorrow, Paddle 8 and Tumblr will open the doors to their exhibit Moving The Still: A Festival of GIFs. Taking place in the heart of Art Basel, the exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the GIF file format. The GIF has recently gained considerable traction in the digital sphere as well as within practices of established artists who utilize the GIF online to bring to life still photography or create new forms of short animation.

To better help everyone understand the GIF's humble beginnnings and to document it's glorious rise to becoming a mainstay of internet pop culture, Legs Media presents A Short History of the GIF directed by Sean Pecknold.
